The “Sorolla in black” exhibition

Sorolla in black

Exhibition
Valencia-València

This exhibition presents a new reading of the work of Joaquín Sorolla, focusing on the importance of black in the paintings of an artist renowned for the way he captures light and colour.

The “Sorolla in black” exhibition at the Bancaja Foundation in Valencia displays around a hundred works by the painter, expanding the exhibition held at the Sorolla Museum in 2022 with works on display to the public for the first time. Although black can be considered the antithesis of colour, this exhibition reveals its importance in Sorolla's painting throughout his career.Through the artist's palette, the use of black becomes an element of expressiveness, suggesting poetic and emotional states. It is reinterpreted as a colour that renders the modernity of its time and its sober elegance. In addition to Sorolla's paintings, the exhibition features a range of objects and documents, such as photographs and an album of Japanese prints.
