The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is proud to present the first retrospective of André Butzer held in an institution outside his home country.
Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the German artist, the exhibition brings together a selection of 22 large-format works, created between 1999 and 2022, including some of his most iconic paintings. The exhibition invites visitors to explore the unique pictorial style developed by Butzer over the years: a fusion between European expressionism and American popular culture that the author himself calls “science fiction expressionism”.André Butzer's canvases reveal a singular artistic universe, which oscillates from the darkness created by gray and black to an explosion of colors, from abstract representations based on lines to cartoon figures, or from flat backgrounds to superimposed layers.
