Matadero Madrid

Matadero Madrid

Madrid

After being refurbished, the old slaughterhouse and livestock market of Madrid has been turned into a large multidisciplinary place for art experimenting and production.

Matadero Madrid, Centre for Contemporary Creation, is situated in a group of industrial buildings built between 1908 and 1928, designed by Luis Bellido for Madrid's livestock market. These buildings are one of the most interesting architectural sites in the city. This industrial heritage has been refurbished and turned into a centre for cultural dissemination, research and creation, with different activities that promote citizen participation. Each building has its own programme and services related to a certain cultural area: for example, performing arts in the Naves del Español buildings; design in the Central de Diseño building; visual arts in the Cineteca, and literature in the Casa del Lector building. It also includes a 4,000 m2 exhibition area (building 16) and a large outdoor space (Calle and Plaza Matadero), where all kinds of concerts and shows take place.
